A long-running battle over how to tackle rat-runners is set to continue after families failed in their attempt to get councillors to allocate cash to tackle the problem.

For years, debate has raged in Mount Pleasant and Albemarle Road, off Unthank Road in Norwich, about how to manage traffic.

At today's meeting of the highways agency committee, made up of city and county councillors, campaigners tried again to get the problem solved. They were hoping 40,000, left over after the committee decided not to spend the full 170,000 to pay for junction and light changes where Eaton Road and Leopold Road cross Newmarket Road, could come their way.

Samir Jeraj, Green city councillor for Town Close, said it was time to sort out the issues, including parents blocking the road when picking and dropping off children, once and for all.

But Bert Bremner, Labour cabinet member for planning and transport, said there were problems all over the city and the 'miniscule' amount of money available had to be prioritised. He said nearby schools should do more to encourage parents not to clog up the roads.

Committee chairman Tony Adams said he had received a 'very positive' letter from Norwich High School for Girls about their plans to tackle the problem.

The committee decided not to use the 40,000 for Mount Pleasant or Albemarle Road, but to allocate it to city-wide waiting restrictions and controlled parking zones.
