Drivers are facing 13 weeks of disruption because of work on part of Norwich's ring road.
The work in Mile Cross Lane and Catton Grove Road, which starts today, will take 13 weeks and will see a road closure, lane closures, temporary traffic lights and reduced speed limits.
The £290,000 project is part of the Transport for Norwich scheme.
That multi-million pound project includes the construction of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road and changes to other city streets, such as to Westlegate, Newmarket Road and Golden Ball Street.
Work on Mile Cross Lane will be carried out using lane closures and temporary traffic signals. A temporary speed limit of 30mph will be in place to protect workers.
For most of the work, access to properties on the south side of Mile Cross Lane will be only from the south side of the carriageway.
For parts of the work, there will be no right turn from St Faiths Road into Mile Cross Lane and from Catton Grove Road to Chartwell Road.
Vehicles will be diverted via Chartwell Road roundabout or the Reepham Road/Aylsham Road junction.
Catton Grove Road will be closed for six days, 24 hours a day, from today until Sunday.
Council bosses say that will mean work can be carried out quickly, minimising disruption.
No through traffic will be permitted but access to properties and businesses will be maintained from Catton Grove Road only, with diversion route and 'businesses open as usual' signs in place.
Buses will also be diverted via Chartwell Road, Constitution Hill and Woodcock Road, with First services 21, 21A and 22 affected.
Bus stops on Catton Grove Road immediately south of the Woodcock Road roundabout can be used during the six-day closure.
A spokesman for Transport for Norwich said: 'The plan is an overarching programme of strategic works to improve accessibility by all modes of transport around the city.
'The aim of the strategy within the urban area is to stabilise traffic levels and to cater for increased demands for travel by more sustainable means.'
And drivers can also expect delays on another part of the city's ring road. Cadent (formerly National Grid Gas Distribution) are carrying out work on Mile End Road to connect properties to gas supplies.
From today, traffic lights will be in place during the work, scheduled to last until Friday.
