If you want a quiet drink in the heart of historic Norwich, then you could do worse than make a beeline to the Woolie, formerly the Woolpack.

Tucked away down Muspole Street, off Colegate, the pub's name was recently changed to differentiate it from the more famous Woolpack in Golden Ball Street.

It's a popular haunt at lunchtimes and after work for office workers in the area and now has one of the largest outside seating areas in the cramped city centre, although the summer's weather has not exactly encouraged people to venture out into it.

The pub is one of the most historic in Norwich and the present building dates back to the 15th century and is Grade 2 listed.

It stands on the site of the Augustinian Priory of Our Lady Walsingham and it was said once to have a tunnel connecting it to neearby St George's Church.

More recently the pub has a checkered history with several closures and then reopenings, but the new management hopes the future will be more stable.

The venue is part of Sarah Roberts' portfolio. In the last few years the popular businesswoman has built up a chain of eateries, pubs and bars around Norwich, including the Mulberry and the Langtry in Unthank Road, Beluga and Farmer Browns in Tombland, Karma Kafe in Bedford Street, and the Buck Inn at Thorpe St Andrew.

Manager Matt Peplow, who started at the Woolie on January 1, has worked for Ms Roberts before and has 20 years' experience in the pub trade in Norwich.

He owned the lease at the Edith Cavell in Tombland for five years and also worked at Karma Kafe, when it was known as Hector's House.

He said: 'We get a great crowd of office workers in here at lunchtime and after work.

'Because of its location we are fairly quiet on weekends. We have got two big screens to show the Norwich games. We do all-day breakfasts and roasts and during the week we do quite well. The food has always been good here, and it's going well.'
