Today’s Norwich Pub of the Week is Take Five in Tombland, which is famed for its warm atmosphere and top customer service

Take 5 is not your average pub and the owner even said he would rather it was known as a cafe/bar than as a local.

The clientele are also not your average pubgoers and owner Nick Barton said the average pub-goer would probably pop their head inside and then leave pretty sharpish.

However, it does have something special that keeps bringing pub punters back and it can also boast its fair share of long-serving regulars, with several generations of some families making it their home from home.

Take 5, whose name conjures up images of jazz legend Dave Brubeck, started off as a co-operative which meant that all the staff had an equal share in its running.

It then became a partnership and Mr Barton and his wife, Marilda, are now the bosses.

He previously ran a cafe bar at Cinema City's Suckling House, which closed when the movie house shut for redevelopment.

He said: 'While we do get lots of lovely young people here, we also get my generation of drinkers, in their 60s, who maybe feel there is nowhere else for them to go in the city centre.

'We do get a broad range of customers, and we try to promote a cafe/bar ambience.

'You can come here with your wife, family and kids, or have a party with your mates.

'When we took over Suckling House I think we broke a mould. I know it was special and we have carried it on here.

'The city centre is so full of cafe chains, while ours is a small, family business and we hope we have found some kind of niche.'

The pub is in the Good Beer Guide and serves organic wines, fairtrade wines and coffee, and most of what it sells is locally produced.

Mr Barton added: 'I think because we started as a co-operative our staff like working here. We always say that it's not just about business, it's also about life.'

The pub is also different in having artworks for sale in the main bar and in the upstairs gallery, but not the five works by Norwich artist Colin Self.

The Evening News has been urging customers to return to pubs in our Love your Local campaign.
