Regulars at the Golden Star like it the way it is – a typical street corner pub of yesteryear, and one of a breed that is fast dying out.

Just a short walk from the city centre, regulars call it a 'country pub in the heart of the city' and would be heartbroken if it lost its 'old-fashioned' charm.

As it says on the pub's new website, people visit to socialise and to have a good time, and landlady Elizabeth Le Grice knows better than to mess with a winning formula.

She took over nearly 10 years ago after working as a barmaid at the nearby Woolpack pub in Muspole Street.

She said: 'When the tenancy at the Golden Star came up, I thought I quite liked doing what I was doing – working at a pub – so I took it on. It's a nice pub and it saves me getting a proper job.

'I'm friends with everyone who drinks here. It's a way of life, it's 24/7 as I live here as well, so it's a lifestyle, but I like it.'

In the last decade the pub has been redecorated but the landlady said she had tried to keep it in the same style with the same decor, furniture and interesting photographs on the walls.

She added: 'It's an old-style pub. We don't have a glitzy, modern bar like many pubs in the city centre, and we've got probably the smallest outside smoking area in the city, but people like it.'

Customers are proud of the pub's fantastic chef Liz Polis, who once worked at the White Lion in Oak Street, and whose speciality is a 'slow cooked – five hour – belly of pork', which is very popular with the regulars.

The pub is also home to a bar billiards league team and a Morris dancers' team known as Golden Star Morris, which was formed around 1979/80 at the pub, a knitting group, and a new bluegrass group is starting next month.

It's also a popular hang out for bell ringers from the nearby St George's church in Colegate.
