Households in Thorpe St Andrew are being offered the chance to take part in a Zero Waste Kitchen Challenge.

The four-week challenge, organised in partnership by Recycle for Norfolk and Sainsbury's, includes a cookery workshop, food waste measurement forms and goodies designed to reduce food waste.

Broadlands District Council is inviting up to 16 homes to take part in the challenge and participants will receive a £20 Sainsbury's voucher as a thank you for taking part in the programme.

Food waste is a big issue in the UK - with the average family throwing away £700 worth of food every year - and the challenge could save families up to £60 a month.

Cllr John Fisher said: 'Most food waste in the UK - 4.1 million tonnes or 61% - is avoidable and could have been eaten had it been better managed.

'We would love to hear from families who are keen to avoid this wastage and make their food go further with the help of the Zero Waste Kitchen Challenge.'

The free cookery workshop takes place on Friday, February 2 from 11.30 am to 2.30pm at the Dussindale Centre in Pound Lane.

Families in the Thorpe St Andrew area who are interested in taking part in the challenge should sign up for the cookery workshop.
