Pubs like the Belle Vue really come into their own when the nights start drawing in and it starts getting colder.

You could even say that this traditional type of corner pub was made for Christmas with logs burning in the fireplace and everyone cuddled up inside enjoying the community spirit. Charles Dickens might have set one of his Christmas stories here.

Landlords Peter and Tiffany Edwards have tried to keep the pub as traditional as possible.

Mrs Edwards said: 'We have tried to maintain as much of the traditional pub as we can, which is really hard in today's economic climate. The two pubs nearby, the Fat Cat and the Alex, cater for real ale/beer drinkers, while we're a leased pub, so we are limited on the kind of beers we can sell.

'But we have kept it a traditional, corner pub that welcomes everyone. We try to bring people together and make everyone feel at home. Some people even feel that it's their second home.'

While many pubs are struggling to survive in the tough times, she said they would fight to keep afloat.

'Hopefully there is a future for this type of pub. We are seeing so many go by the wayside at the moment, but we will fight to make sure we survive.'

Mrs Edwards has worked at the pub for about 20 years but is also a teacher at Avenue Junior School, so the pub is mainly run during the week by her husband and bar manager, Holly Dolman. Mr Edwards was a builder who came to Norwich about 15 years ago from Croydon, and stayed on.

He said: 'I like the atmosphere of working in a pub and meeting people all the time. Touch wood, we don't get any grief here. People feel at ease. I just wish the locals would support us more.'

Miss Dolman has been behind the bar at the Enterprise Inns-owned pub about four years, after starting as a waitress when she was just 18 and then getting bar-trained.

'I like building up that customer relationship,' she said. 'We must be doing something right because people keep coming back.'

The pub is popular with football fans, hosts a good quiz night, and also boasts a nice garden in the summertime.

The Evening News has been urging people to return to pubs in our Love your Local campaign.
