The winners take it all at final matches of Filipino games in Norwich

A summer of sport organised by a Norwich Filipino organisation came to a close with dramatic matches before the overall winners were crowned.
The opening game of Pinoy In Norwich Aksyong Samahan’s (PINAS) SportsFest was back in June, and since then teams have played each week, all building up to the final at City Academy.
And after a summer of hard work, Hillside Daredevils took home the title, while Ryan Corpuz took home the Rookie of the Year award, and Joe Tolentino was named Most Improved Player, as well as the under 18’s Most Valuable Player.
In the junior division, the Kings Lynn team won the overall 18 and under category, and the Norwich Royales won the women’s volleyball competition.
Tess Ward, PINAS president, said it was an opportunity for the whole Filipino community to get together.
“Audiences were mostly family members and friends, mothers cheering for their sons or husbands or both,” she said.
“There were fathers and sons playing in a team, sisters cheering for their brothers.
“It was full of fun and excitement, especially for the parents who were strictly focussed on their son’s performance.”
Although it was a fun day, the idea behind it was a serious one.
Tess said: “PINAS’s aim in organising this sports event was to encourage young and adult to become active and fit and to develop friendly relationship among fellow Filipinos living in Norwich and Norfolk.
“We wanted to foster good sportsmanship, to encourage others to do their best and also learn to accept defeat, learn to show respect to fellow players, referees and coaches and respect the rules of the game.”
Helping Tess organise the event were Neil Dimaano and Bing Candaza, and she is keen to hear from people wanting to join, email firstname.lastname@example.org
