The wet weather for the first day of the 2017 Royal Norfolk Show brought back memories from 60 years ago for sisters Sally Clarke and Margaret Morfoot.
For as they posed for a picture for our photographer in the torrential rain at the show yesterday they were partly recreating a similar moment from the 1957 Royal Norfolk Show.
Six decades ago they were young farmers and they had gone to the show with their late friend Greta Allen, née Corner. The weather was similarly wet and, dressed in rainmacks and holding umbrellas, the trio were photographed by the EDP at the time.
Miss Clarke, 77, and Mrs Morfoot, 80, who live next to each other in Kingsley Road in Norwich, dug out the old photo before they headed to the show yesterday.
Miss Clarke said: “It was very wet in 1957 but it obviously wasn’t until we arrived because we were wearing high heels and we had to buy the macs when we got here. The photo was in the EDP. I knew I had the photo and got it out again because we thought it was fun.”
Mrs Morfoot added they had lots of happy memories of attending the show over the years.
She said: “It’s wonderful isn’t it, and there is so much more to see these days too.
“Back then it used to be mainly animals and farm machinery, but it has always been a meeting place, meeting friends from the farming community.”
For their visit to the show yesterday the sisters were joined by their friend Chloe Ecclestone, 80, who lives in Acle.
