It is being billed as 'the biggest little Christmas show' and tomorrow the curtain goes up on the Maddermarket Theatre's festive production of The Borrowers.
The stage adaptation of Mary Norton's classic story about the tiny Clock family who live beneath the floorboards and the 'human beans' will be at the city venue until January 3, and the director Peter Sowerbutts said the cast and crew have had a great time creating the show.
Mr Sowerbutts, who also directed the theatre's last two Christmas shows, The Railway Children and The Snow Queen, said: 'It is such a great story - what a fantastic invention by Mary Norton to come up with the idea of little people who live under the floorboards and who humans never see.
'I think audiences coming to the show can expect to enjoy what the Maddermarket is best known for, which is telling fantastic stories at Christmas.'
Mr Sowerbutts described the story as a Christmas adventure which sees the tiny characters go on a quest they never expected.
He said it was a show for people of all ages and that it was full of visual spectacle.
Puppets and actors share the stage to portray the differences in size between the minute Borrowers and the 'human beans.'
'The puppets are amazing and the costumes are fantastic,' Mr Sowerbutts said.
'It's a very visual show and there are all sorts of extraordinary tricks that we play on stage - there's modern technology brought into a Victorian story to make it visually very exciting.'
