Monster rolls, illusions, and angel rolls were out in full force as gym was combined with dance and quick handling as part of a colourful contest held the University of East Anglia this weekend.

These moves were just some of those pulled off in front of a panel of judges at the Sportspark as teams battled it out at the British Baton Twirlers Sports Association event.

Over two days, everyone from five-year-old novices through to those in their 20s performing at the highest international levels took part, competing in categories ranging from the solo twirl through to the club event.

Jo-Ann Robertson is technical director for British Baton Twirling Association and said that the county was a hotbed for twirling talent, adding:

“I think it’s because it’s a creative place and baton twirling is a creative sport, and you also have some great facilities such as one we’re in now, which can be hard to find.”

“The seating has been packed for the weekend, and the great thing is that the spectators have been so supportive of every single team that has gone on the floor so we’ve had a great atmosphere.”

The event was one of three such contests held across the country in a year, with a special performance from world champion Karissa Wimberley proving a highlight.

And over the course of the contest local talent also shone through, with Norwich based Angel Baton Twirlers and Charisma, from Gorleston, picking up gold. The teams will now be heading to Richardson’s Holiday Camp in Scratby for their annual camp week.
