North Walsham High School student Jack Tritton has chalked up his first podium finish of the Formula Kart Stars campaign - whose 'old boys ' include F1 ace Lewis Hamilton.

But he also won a prestigious 'driver of the day' and got the GCSE results he needed to land his dream college place.

Jack, 16, stepped on the winner's rostrum for the first time, after securing second and third places at the Three Sisters track near Wigan.

After he first success Jack said: 'Finally! After a hard day with being fast but unfortunate I have finally shown my true pace and got a podium.

'I have learnt a lot from today with running with the quick drivers and hopefully will continue with the good results.'

His second place Saturday form earned him the Bernie Ecclestone Driver of the Day prize, where the prize also includes passes to next year's Formula 1 British Grand Prix.

The previous best finish was sixth in a season dogged with hitches including broken sprockets and seized chains - which continued last weekend in Cumbria.

But after an eight-hour drive home Jack opened his GCSE results at 2am to find he had the grades he needed to secure a motorsport engineering course place at City College Norwich.

Mum Kate said: 'We were tired but he was very happy.'

The youngster is lying fifth in the championship whose final round is at the GYG circuit in Wales on September 4-6.

The Formula Kart Stars series is being shown on Sky Sports F1 Channel. The Wigan weekend was also filmed by CNN.

Mrs Tritton said the Driver of the Day award was very pleasing as it was voted on by the series organisers which meant Jack was being noticed.

She also praised the youngster for his mature attitude, particularly when things were not going well.

'Some drivers come in a kick things. But Jack never lets it get to him - he just accepts it and look forward to the next round.'

Jack caught the racing bug at KartTrak in Cromer in 2012 while at a friend's birthday.

His podium successes earned him £700 in prize money, which has gone back into the racing fund for a season that costs £42,000 to enter - aside from any parts and crash damage,

Grandparents have been helping, along with sponsors Karttrak Cromer, STS pro Tyres, 5 Day Driving Norwich, Eastern Financial Consultants, Horsford Windows and Empire Print & Embroidery. But the team is still seeking more financial help.
