An Old Catton man became abusive to police after he took alcohol and painkillers following the death of his mother, a court has heard.

Lee Alan Cook, who appeared at Norwich Magistrates' Court yesterday, admitted being abusive and threatening on April 14.

The court heard how paramedics and a police officer were called to Cook's house after reports that someone inside had taken an overdose.

Denis King, prosecuting, described how Cook had told the officer to go away and had threatened to 'get him' with a crow bar.

The police officer then called for back-up and eventually they managed to break down the front door.

Mr King said: 'Pc Williams attempted to taser Mr Cook after he ignored their please to stand still, but the taser got caught on the broken door frame.

'Pc Williams attempted again and, seeing the red dots on him, Mr Cook said: 'Don't taser me, I will come quietly.'.'

Cook, of Longe Road, was taken to have his stomach pumped and told police in interview that his actions had been unacceptable and he had consumed alcohol and painkillers.

Gavin Cowe, mitigating, said his client's mother had died on March 9, and at the time of the offence his eight-year relationship had also recently ended.

Mr Cowe said: 'He is appalled, ashamed and embarrassed by his behaviour.'

Cook was given a conditional discharge for two years.
