Scenes from The Lion King, Mamma Mia, Pirates of the Caribbean and Michael Jackson’s Thriller brought the summer holiday’s to life at the Norwich Playhouse theatre last week.

About 35 youngsters aged between five and 14 put on a show for a packed-out auditorium as part of Broadland District Council’s Tots2Teens holiday activity programme.

The children, some of whom are pictured right, attended a number of day-long sessions to learn the routines, make costumes and practice music, culminating in a two-day workshop at the Playhouse with professional theatre company, DramActive Academy.

Sarah Carter, mother of Annabel, Luc and Ellie who all took part in the show, said: “My children have learnt how to make bread, design and spray paint a graffiti style T-shirt, how to play basketball, tennis, table tennis, badminton and record a DVD in a proper recording studio. But the real highlight for all of them was being able to work with Jane Ashdown of DramActive Academy doing the musical theatre workshops each week, culminating in a wonderful show at The Playhouse.

“How often at age seven do you get the chance to work with a professional, have fun and appear on a real stage with a real audience? It was just fantastic to see what they had achieved with only 10 hours rehearsing.”

The council’s Tots2Teens programme runs during all school holidays and involves a wide variety of activities for those who live or go to school in Broadland – from sport to cooking and art to learning about wildlife.

Broadland’s leisure services co-ordinator, Nicola Pye, said: “The children have all worked so hard to put on a fantastic show for family and friends. It’s lovely to see how much they have enjoyed performing on the stage.”

There are 50pc discounts for the programme available to residents claiming council tax or housing benefits. For more information on Tots2Teens, go to www.broadland.gov.uk/t2t or call 01603 430538.
