Children from Lakenham have been celebrating after winning a competition to have their pictures made into a new sign.

Pupils from Lakenham Primary School, on City Road, were asked to create designs by the Friends of Lakenham Way to help improve signage around the area.

The Friends involved the local community after receiving money through Participatory Budgeting from Norwich City Council last year.

Chair of the group, councillor Stephen Little, said: 'We wanted to involve young people in improving the Way. It was suggested as part of that bid that some of the money be used for signage which the children could design themselves.

'We went into the school to talk to each of the three Years 5 & 6 classes involved – about 75 children in total.

'We told the children about the nature along the Way and also some of the problems, particularly litter. We suggested they look at our website for inspiration or go down to the Way and take a look for themselves.'

The overall winner was Sara Hussein of Ingram Court, Norwich, and she won a prize of an iPod Shuffle, courtesy of Virgin Money. Sara's mother, Sally Hussein, said: 'We think it's brilliant. She was over the moon. We walk past that area every day, past the people walking and the bridges. We can't wait to see the sign.'

Second prize went to Salome Gil and the runners up were Amber Day, Molly Noonan, Rebekah Browne and Teresa Martin.

Mr Little added: 'The signs will enhance the look and also give local young people a sense of ownership and connection.

'By educating children about the nature along the Way, they understand it is a place to value and treat with respect.

'I have been very impressed by the children's enthusiasm and interest and I hope the school's involvement will continue.'

The Friends of Lakenham Way formed two years ago when Lakenham Way was highlighted as a priority at the Lakenham and Tuckswood Safer Neighbourhood Panel.

It is hoped the signs will be made within six weeks.
