Controversial plans to switch off up to 27,000 street lights across Norfolk between midnight and 5am were today agreed by Norfolk County Council's cabinet.

Controversial plans to switch off up to 27,000 street lights across Norfolk between midnight and 5am were today agreed by Norfolk County Council's cabinet.

The cabinet agreed in principle to the move, which council bosses say will save around £167,000 a year and will help reduce the authority's carbon footprint.

The council says lights in high crime areas and on major roads will not be switched off, while a number of exemptions will be applied, such as in areas with CCTV cameras.
