Youngsters from Sprowston Community High School and nearby Falcon Junior School were given a donation of fruit trees by the East of England Apples and Orchards Project to help develop their outdoor learning space.

An area of land on the high school's site is being re-modelled to create the area of raised beds, a woodland area, sensory garden, allotments, and now the newly-planted orchard.

Around 40 pupils and farmers from White House Farm in Sprowston took to the area to get planting, which teachers said gave Sprowston youngsters a chance to work alongside their younger counterparts and take on student leader roles.

Malcolm Johnston, the school's community events manager, who organised the day, said: 'Our new outdoor learning area offers a wonderful opportunity for students to learn outside of the classroom.

'We are very grateful to be working with White House Farm who delivered a fun and educational activity enjoyed by all.'

The activity began with a short demonstration on how to plant fruit trees, followed by pupils working in small groups to do so. Michelle Margree, Falcon Junior's geography and outdoor learning co-ordinator said: 'The children thoroughly enjoyed planting the orchard which enabled them to build on their understanding of where food comes from, whilst improving the school environment for themselves and future generations.'

The school is now seeking further donations and support from local businesses to help continue developing the area.

Those interested in supporting the school's project or would like further information should contact the community events manager on 01603 481888 or by emailing bookings@sprowstonhigh.org
