A charity night held in memory of Sprowston car and bike enthusiast, Nigel Mallett, has raised over 1,000 for charity.

Nigel died suddenly from leukaemia in June of last year, aged 64, so his friend and business partner of 40 years, John Hipperson, decided to organise a fundraiser.

A night of music and fun was held at Spixworth Social Club on Tuesday, February 7 in aid of the Anthony Nolan Trust, a charity which recruits donors to the bone marrow register, finding donors who have matching stem cells or bone marrow.

Nigel, a former joiner and carpenter, was told in the summer of 2011 he had just weeks to live before being offered a trial treatment of chemotherapy.

After this, he went into remission, but to fully beat the disease he needed a stem cell transplant, used to treat cancers that are in the bone marrow.

Unfortunately his age meant the only suitable donor was from his brother, Tom, who was not a match.

A father of two, Sam and Matt, and grandfather of Sequoia, his wife of 45 years, Sarah, described him as a 'man of kindness and determination'.

John, 66 and also from Sprowston, said of the music event: 'The event was a great success and together we raised 1006.56 for the Anthony Nolan Trust.

'It was a cold Tuesday night in a small village so to get a turnout of between 170 and 200 people was absolutely brilliant.

A big selection of local bands featured on the line-up for the evening, including; The Emma Hall Band, Graham McGrotty, FireWire, BusStop, Wypeout, Simon Whitney, Louisa Sadler, Barry Wortley and Vic Salter.

While the compre for the evening for the raffle and charity auction was BBC Radio Norfolk's Karen Buchanan.

The raffle had bottles of spirits as prizes and the auction included a ride in a Beaufort vintage car and a carpenter for a day's work,

John added: 'We last held an event like this about six years ago and raised about 700 so we said it would be nice to raise 1,000 and we managed to do just that.

'We would like to thank everyone for their support of the Mega Jam, auction and raffle we held in memory of Nigel.'

Photographs and a video of the night have been produced and can be seen at www.spixjam.org.uk
