The tastes of southern Europe will be coming to Norwich city centre later this month as a new restaurant opens.

Jorge Santos plans to open Jorge's, on Orford Yard, off Red Lion Street, at the end of October or early November.

In the former home of Orford Flat Iron steakhouse, which closed earlier this year, the restaurant will serve southern European cuisine, including meat grilled in a charcoal oven, Sunday brunches and traditional tastes of Mediterranean countries.

It hopes to take diners on a journey through the regions - from the seafood restaurants of Portugal to the tapas bars of Spain and markets of Uruguay.

Mr Santos spotted the site after moving to Norwich 18 months ago with his family, including Norwich-born wife Eleanor, and decided it was the ideal spot to launch the business.

He said: 'We have lived in Portugal for the last 14 years, but we decided to move here to have family around us.

'I had been looking for about a year for a space, and we found a couple but we couldn't find the right one.

'But when this came up we knew it was the right place for us.'

He said the menu is still in design, and Mr Santos is due to take his chef to Portugal for three days later this month to introduce him to authentic flavours and dishes. But he said Norwich was quickly beginning to feel like home

'I love the city,' he said. 'It's such a nice place to live, and I feel safe when I walk out and about. My daughter loves it here too, so we definitely aren't going anywhere.'

Mr Santos said his love of cooking was inspired by tragedy - when he was just 21, his mother, a keen cook, died.

'I was at law school, at the beginning of university, when my mother died,' he said, 'and I got tired of eating in the university canteens so one day I said I'm going to start cooking what my mother used to cook.

'I started cooking for fun, and loved it. Now even I get home late I like to cook a meal for my family.'

According to its website, the restaurant will be closed on Mondays, but open for lunch and dinner throughout the week, and from 11.30am to 2pm on Sundays.
