The sister of a heroic Norwich teacher who died saving his wife on an Egyptian honeymoon cruise has described him as 'the most amazing brother anyone could ever have'.

As the Evening News reported, Luke Day, 31, who taught French at Costessey High School, died after his sailing boat was hit by a violent storm on the Nile on Monday.

It was reported Mr Day, who lived in Newmarket Street, near Unthank Road, pushed his wife Sophie Nicholson Cole and two other passengers to safety when the metre high waves started swamping their felucca sailing boat

He tried to save himself but became trapped and drowned as the 35ft wooden vessel overturned.

Mr Day's sister, Hampshire businesswoman Erin Welker, 29, told the paper in Bournemouth, where she lives: 'Luke had the most amazing smile and infectious laugh, and always looked for the positive in everything. He was an adventurer who lived for the day.

'One of his great loves was music. He played the guitar, the banjo and the mandolin and was always singing.'

The honeymoon couple were preparing to sail from Aswan to Luxor when the accident happened.

Miss Welker said: 'As was always the way with my brother, he thought of everyone except himself and helped the others out of the boat.'

The Days married in Norwich last April and the best man at their wedding was Simon Hickman, 31, from Lymington, Hampshire.

He said: 'You couldn't find a more loveable bloke - he was a genuine all-round good guy who was always up to something.'

Mr Day was acting head of languages at the 980-pupil Costessey High School, where he had taught for four years.

Hundreds of pupils have posted messages on a Facebook tribute page set up in his memory.
