Top match anglers who frequent the banks of the tidal River Yare may have to look to their laurels – there's a new name on the block.
Paul Duise-Smith, who hails from Woodton, near Bungay, had been little more than an occasional visitor to the Nisa Feeder League without seeing his name up in lights.
But all that changed on Saturday, when the Angling Direct tackle salesman stunned the opposition by heaving out a 43lb 4oz fifth-round winner.
Speaking about his sudden success this week, the 32-year-old victor, who pocketed £250 for his effort at peg 117, explained he had fancied the swim because it had provided Karl Redgrave with a 60lb 4oz winning bag earlier this month.
And, to boost his enthusiasm even further, the early flood tide was lifting an ideal tinge into the water.
'I went for bream from the start with worm on a feeder rig and my first fish was a 4lb slab. I went on to take more bream, mostly skimmers, and this catch is my best in this competition so far,' he said.
Will Freeman (Preston Innovations), who is rated the most versatile of this high-class field, was runner-up with a mixed bag of 40lb 8oz from peg 43. He was followed by another former champion, Wayne Anderson (Angling Direct) with 37lb 6oz of bream from long-term favourite peg 147.
League organiser Andy Wilson-Sutter said: 'Our River Yare competitions are ever growing in popularity and we are getting record attendances this season with anglers putting in a round trip of more than 200 miles.
'I would advise local anglers hoping for a place in the two-day Keith Ford Memorial on August 5-6 to apply for tickets now.'
Further afield, on the Decoy Lakes at Whittlesey, the R and J Pipe Masters was won by King's Lynn electrician Jimmy Brooks (Middy) who collected the £6,000 prize for his sparkling catch of 212lb 14oz of carp, with Sam Brown (Maver) runner-up with 204lb 3oz.
Commented the 24-year-old winner: 'I fed caster and baited my pole rig with pellet. The result ranks as my career best.'
