Sick Ella set for new op

Sick tot Ella-Grace Honeyman is set to have her final high-risk surgery in America this July - although her family fear a recent bout of headaches and sickness could see her rushed overseas sooner.

The little girl, who has rare condition vein of Galen malformation, is scheduled to have a sixth operation to seal leaking blood vessels in her brain on July 1.

But mum Laura Honeyman said her younger daughter, who turns three next month, had experienced bad headaches and sickness last week which she feared could be the return of problems experienced last November.

Then, New York surgeon Alex Berenstein, who has performed four of Ella-Grace's five operations so far, decided she needed treatment as soon as possible and hastily arranged a surgery for December.

Mrs Honeyman said: “If she starts to have more of these headaches they might have to bring the operation forward. It might be a sign she's got this build up of pressure and problems with drainage again.”

Hospital tests following a seizure at Easter did not show any problems but the mother, who also lives with husband Ryan and elder daughter Niamh, said it did not stop her worrying.

She said: “Hopefully it was just a blip but, if not, we know what to look out for. You can't help fearing things aren't right but she's not had anymore since then.”

It puts added pressure on the family, who live in Hevingham, to raise the funds needed for the treatment. The Honeymans chose to send Ella-Grace abroad to have her treated by the most experienced surgeon, but it means they must find £40,000 for each operation.
