The city's going fashion crazy this month with new stores opening, the autumn and winter trends firmly in the shops and a plethora of items that will make you look and feel stylish while raising money for breast cancer research, says Emma Harrowing.

1-4 October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and there are many gorgeous products you can treat yourself to while helping raise funds for breast cancer research. Life Matters loves the Stand Tall collection of shoes from Dorothy Perkins; the spot balcony t shirt bra, 10 and matching shorts, 5, from BHS, and the Crme de la Mer illuminating powder, 65. All of these products donate a percentage of sales to Breast Cancer Care.

5-6 Fashion has gone back to the 50s and 60s. Whether you prefer the 50s dresses with clinched in waists or the flirty mini skirt from the 60s you can get the retro look with these geometric earrings from the new Idol jewellery collection at New Look.

7-8 If you like the 50s look head to Poppy Valentine in the Royal Arcade as the stylish shop has reinvented the classic Doris Day dress. The dress has been developed using the original 1950s pattern and is made from vintage fabrics. Wear the dress with tights, boots and a polo shirt underneath for day and on its own with heels and jewellery for an evening out. Doris Day dress, 75, Poppy Valentine.

9-10 Stuck for what to wear in the office this autumn and winter? T.M. Lewin in Chapelfield could provide the answer with its new AW10 collection. The range features slim suits, checked shirts and pussy bow blouses, giving a 50s/60s twist to professional wear. Life Matters loves the Love Lewin Cerise Paisley Shirt, 44.50, black Joan pencil skirt, 70 and black croc handbag, 129; and the Season Travel grey two-button suit with flat front trousers, 249, check shirt, 34.50 and tie, 29.50. All from T.M.Lewin in Chapelfield.

11-14

It's time to go shopping crazy as five new stores are opening in Chapelfield. 60s and 70s fashion brand Biba has already had a relaunch in House of Fraser and Life Matters has fallen in love with the military style coat and the soft purple jersey dress already, goodness knows how much we will spend when more pieces come into store at the end of the month!

Fun loving Superdry has also soon opened its doors on Chapelfield Plain, with its vintage inspired hoodies and preppy T shirts.

And if you love Superdry you will adore Hollister which will open in Chapelfield mall before Christmas. Home to clothes and accessories that ooze Californian cool, the store is perfect if you love laid back, easy to wear style.

If gadgets and homewares are your thing then Clas Olsen which is taking over the old Borders store is the place for you. The store is a cross between Woolworths, B&Q and Ikea.

15- 20 Competition time: Win one of 10 fish pedicures at The Mall

It's the pedicure that has caused a stir among Life Matters readers since we reported on it last month. Dr Spa Fish involves live fish nibbling away the dead skin on your feet. The Garra Rufa or 'Doctor Fish' work through the build up of hard skin on the heels and soles of the feet leaving the healthy skin untouched. Dr Spa Fish pride themselves on using 100pc genuine Turkish fish (the treatment originated from Turkey 400 years ago). The water is cleaned between each treatment to sure that it is germ free.

Life Matters and the Norwich Evening News have teamed up with Dr Spa Fish in The Mall to offer you the chance to win one of ten hand or foot treatments so that you can experience the technique for yourself.

To be in with a chance of winning answer the following question: What breed of toothless fish do Dr Spa Fish use for their walk-in pedicure therapy?

Send your answer along with your name, address and daytime contact details to: Emma Harrowing, Life Matters/Dr Spa Fish competition, Norwich Evening News, Prospect House, Rouen Road, Norwich, NR1 1RE or email emma.harrowing@archant.co.uk Closing date for entries is Friday October 8, 2010. Usual Archant competition rules apply.

21-24 Trend Alert: For women - Velvet

There's just something so deliciously decadent about this winter's love affair with all things velvet. After months of miserable belt-tightening and make-do-and-mend recession chic, we could all do with adding a touch of opulence to our wardrobes. Life Matters loves the midnight blue coat, 120, Per Una at Marks & Spencer; velvet 1920s headband, 14, Long Tall Sally; velvet skirt, 80, French Connection in Chapelfield; culottes, 25, Red Herring at Debenhams; velvet shift dress, 130, Linea at House of Fraser in Chapelfield and velvet platforms, 16, Matalan.

27-29 Trend alert: For men – Off duty racing driver

Formula 1 racing drivers have it all: fast cars, hot girlfriends and style. We can't help with the car or the girlfriend, but we can help with the style bit.

We're not going to suggest you start wearing brightly coloured leather all-in-ones. You'd look ridiculous down the local. You need to copy their off-duty look instead: a leather jacket teamed with smart jeans. Life Matters loves: Jacket, 174.99, Superdry in Cult and soon the Superdry store in Chapelfield; T shirt, 15, Debenhams; white jeans, 65, French Connection in Chapelfield and boots, 75, White Stuff.

30 – 31 It's that time of year again for spooks and ghouls and things that go bump in the night. But never fear; this Bat torch will give you vampire vision in the dark! Peter Storm Adventurers Bat Torch, 7.99, Millets.
