Residents of a Broads village are fed up with repeated flooding which led to a recent sewage overflow in one street.

Hoveton resident Kerry Walker, who runs a community Facebook page, said two Meadow Drive residents had raw sewage flowing through their gardens earlier this month.

She said: 'When we have bad weather the sewage system can't cope and we have problems. Two residents living in Meadow Drive couldn't use their toilets or showers for five days following flooding earlier this month.

'The current weather has put so much pressure on the pumping station that it is not able to cope with demand.'

She said many residents were concerned about the impact further housing developments could have on the village.

'If the Anglian Water pumping station is not coping now in Hoveton, how will it manage with more houses.'

Dave Martin, who lives in Meadow Drive, said raw sewage was flowing through his garden 'like a river'.

'Anglian Water officials came around very quickly and have been back on site a couple of times since and did what they could,' he said.

'But we've been told the pumps are working at full capacity and cannot cope.'

An Anglian Water spokesperson said the company was battling flooding and a high water table in Hoveton.

'Our telemetry shows the pumping station is working, but we are sending a technician to check it nonetheless, and see if we can optimise it further to boost pumping capability.

'The Broads levels appear to be dropping now, and mirroring that we're seeing things going back to normal, which reinforces the fact that this is a result of the high water levels rather than faulty equipment or something that's broken.'

Hoveton Parish Council chairman Martin Richmond said they were aware of the problem and were working with authorities and those affected to find a solution.

'Meadow Drive is low lying and close to the river. We have been in touch with the two residents and Anglian Water who told us there was water ingress at multiple points and they would conduct a survey of the pipe to find out where the ingress point are.

'We are doing our best to help those affected.'
