As of 2012, the United Nations marks the 11th of October as International Day of the Girl. The day aims to highlight the challenges that girls face while promoting female empowerment all over the world.

There is a particular emphasis on helping girls in crisis in developing countries while also looking at issues of everyday sexism and how this can be prevented.

In Norwich the GirlsRoar! Campaign have worked hard to deliver inspiring events for all ages and genders as well as running workshops and activities for schools and community groups.

They are an inclusive organisation who work with all sections of the community to advocate for girls' rights locally, nationally and globally. Last year they hosted a fantastic array of 'zine making, drama and art workshops all designed to promote creativity, confidence and equality.

This year the organisation is teaming up with Norwich Arts Centre Sound and Vision to host a film screening of Girlhood as well as a Q&A with Women's' rights activist Dolly Ogunrinde.

Girlhood follows the story of teenager Marieme who hooks up with three other girls in a close knit gang. Soon they embark on drug-dealing and minor theft in the Parisian suburb in which they live. For them it is all about freedom, identity and youth empowerment.

Dolly Ogunrinde is the former women's officer and winner of the Woman Student of the Year Award at UEA. She works with underprivileged young people in South London as well as campaigns with Sisters Uncut.

The event will be held at Cinema City on the 11th of October at 8:30pm.

Tickets cost £11.60 for adults and £10.60 concessions.

They are also holding a story time in the Millennium Library on the 14th of October designed for children age six and under. The event is free but participants should be sure to arrive at least fifteen minutes early to collect their tickets.

There will also be the chance to add words and pictures to the 'Inspirational Women' Graffiti Wall.
