School children and teenagers picked up conservation skills at an historic church which is going through a major transformation.

The medieval St Edmund's Church on Folgate Lane, Old Costessey, is undergoing a £192,100 renovation.

Work is under way to re-roof the entire nave and chancel of the grade I-listed building in slate.

It is estimated the renovations, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will be completed this autumn.

Pupils from the Bawburgh School, Queen's Hill Primary School, as well as GCSE students from Ormiston Victory Academy learned about different materials and building techniques used during a raising the roof conservation skills day.

Costessey residents have also learned about the major project.

As well as roof repairs, the church will eventually house an exhibition telling the story of the local community and famous local characters.
