You can forget football, rugby and tennis.

For 15-year-old Robbie Allander, only one sport matters - roller hockey.

Fresh from representing England at the European Championships, the Thorpe St Andrew High School pupil now has his sights set on the future.

But the high cost of training, competing and travelling means Robbie's dreams may be in jeopardy.

Rather than simply giving up, Robbie sent letters out to local companies asking for help meeting his annual costs of over £3,500.

'At 15 I am unable to work and am looking to raise any money to help fund another year of training and competition to increase my chances of selection,' he said.

While ice and field hockey are popular up and down the country, roller hockey is still a relatively unknown sport.

Robbie said: 'I was skating at Funky Monkeys and someone mentioned roller hockey.

'I went along and I loved it straight away.'

Having played for seven years, Robbie was selected to represent his country at the European Championships in France, finishing a respectable 8th place.

He said: 'It's quite intense and very quick. It's fairly dangerous too but I enjoy it.

'It's a bit different and that's why I love it.'

Roller hockey is a team effort for the Allander family, with Robbie's older brother Tommy on the England under 20 squad and mum Lisa is on the committee for the Eastern Counties Roller Hockey Association.

She said: 'The boys love it! They didn't really take to football and roller hockey isn't known about so much, but in this area it's really strong.

'My eldest son drives for five hours just for one game.

'I think it's the team side of things, it's just fantastic.

'He really wants to keep doing it but it's just the cost.'
