Riverside pub to get revamp

PUBLISHED: 16:39 31 August 2010

A popular riverside pub on the outskirts of Norwich is to close for a £147,000 revamp.

The Rushcutters in Yarmouth Road, Thorpe St Andrew, will be closing for 10 days for a refurbishment.

The pub is owned by Punch Taverns and the facelift is aimed at giving the pub, on the banks of the Yare, a brighter and more contemporary look.

A spokeswoman for Punch said: “The site is one of our Chef & Brewer pubs and will undergo a £147,000 investment to give the pub a new bright, fresh and contemporary look.

“Our guests have told us how much they like our new look Chef and Brewer pubs and this re-development forms part of a larger investment programme which will transform 50 of our sites across the UK.”

It will close on Monday, September 6, and re-open on Thursday, September 16, with a new food menu.

The Rushcutters, once called the Boat and Bottle, underwent a major refurbishment costing £720,000 in 1998.

While the Rushcutters may be closing temporarily, another city pub has been celebrating its reopening.

The Gibraltar Gardens, in Heigham Street, closed in January and had a “soft” reopening a few weeks ago, with plans to hold its official reopening event over this weekend.

A bouncy castle, face painting, live bands and a quiz night are just some of the events that have been taking place from Friday to Monday. The pub underwent a £100,000 makeover earlier this year after it was taken over by business partners Simon Shimmon and Paul Thomas.

The Evening News launched its Love Your Local campaign to highlight the importance of the city’s pubs as community hubs.

The paper has been highlighting the
fundraising and community work of pubs in a bid to support the trade at a time when many pubs are closing their doors.
