A 78-year-old man may have been dead for some time before his body was found, an inquest heard.

Retired carpenter Frederick Curtis was pronounced dead at his home in Valley Road, Costessey, on April 12.

A Norwich inquest heard yesterday that police forced entry to Mr Curtis's home after neighbours grew concerned about his welfare.

A post-mortem examination was carried out but was unable to ascertain the cause of death, because of the length of time Mr Curtis had been dead.

However, Norfolk coroner William Armstrong said he was satisfied that, thanks to reports carried out, the likeliest cause of death was cardiac failure, and he recorded a verdict of death by natural causes.

No members of Mr Curtis's family attended the inquest.
