I attended Norwich City's game against Swindon on August 8, and just before kick-off stood to join in the traditional chorus of On the Ball City.

Unless I blinked and missed it, or they did it early, it didn't happen. Why? I know cup competitions, especially the League Cup, (doesn't that sound better than any amount of sponsors' names?) don't seem to have the same allure these days, but wouldn't morale and the sometimes-criticised atmosphere, benefit from our historic song – the oldest football song in the world?

MORE: Goose on the loose at Carrow Road gets 'biggest cheer of the night'On another note, well done to the paramedic/ambulance man and others who managed to catch and take to safety the goose (yes, I thought it was a duck too) which in its panic flew down a tunnel between the City and River End stands after several circuits of the pitch.

As a Norwich supporter I often live in a world of hope over reason but I'm feeling positive – again – that our new head coach will bring some typical German efficiency and success to the Canaries this season.
