A community on the outskirts of Norwich is finally getting to know itself, after hundreds of people turn out for a street party to celebrate the Royal Wedding.

People living in Queens Hills in Costessey still don't have a community centre, but they do have a school and all proceeds from the party organised by resident Gary Blundell are going to the school.

Mr Blundell said: 'We put out 1500 flyers in the area telling people what was happening and we are hoping to get about 600 people here.

'We decided to hold the event here, in Fieldfair Way, because this is where the school is and it's the hub of the community.

'We're hoping that it will have brought people together. Thanks to sponsorshop we raised 1000 for a hog roast and we had some good raffle prizes including a 1000 travel pass from First Buses, which will be put up for auction.

'We also have a prince and princess contest, a beer tent, tombola, live music, bar, games, bungee run, fairground rides and much more.'

Emily Mustoe, who lives in Quuens Hills, took her children Rebecca, three, and Jack, 18 months, and her sister Laura McMahon, who was staying with them, to the event, after watching the Royal Wedding on TV earlier in the day.

She said: 'It's a good idea considering there are so few facilities here for children. We don't have a community centre or any playgrounds, although the parish council has just approved the playgrounds, so we are waiting with bated breath to get them before the summer.

'Let's hope that this kind of event will be the start of things to come and will be commonplace once we get our community centre.'

Carla Hipperson, also from Queens Hills, said it was a good idea.

'It's nice for the community to have somewhere to go. We are a forgotten community but hopefully this will bring us together.'
