The 132-year history of the Quebec Tavern is to end as plans to turn it into a bed and breakfast were approved on Thursday.

It has been a pub in Thorpe Hamlet since 1886 and was listed as an asset of community value by Norwich and Norfolk CAMRA.

That gave the community the chance to buy the pub, but no groups came forward. The pub was then put up for sale last year, but attracted no offers.

And after Norwich City Council's planning committee heard there are eight other pubs within an 800 metre radius there were few grounds on which to object to a new nine bedroom B&B.

Committee chair Keith Driver said it was 'a shame'.

'I thought it was one of the best pubs in the area,' he said. 'The pub was a popular place, it was used all the time and it is a great shame.'

Liberal Democrat James Wright agreed it was 'lamentable', adding: 'The pub has been closed for a while and it is not sustainable.'
