After being closed for nearly a year-and-a-half the Larkman Lane post office is set to be reopened next month - to the delight of residents.

The thoughts of residents who use the post office

•Glenn Cossey, 58, who lives on Friends Road, said: “Very please it’s going to be open. It’s the handiest thing. So many old people live around here and they were very dependant on it.”

•Darren Cossey, 48, unemployed who lives on Knowland Grove, said: “Glad to have it back. The community will be so happy because the branch is a god-send. Everyone was disappointed when it closed down and it’s hard for people to get to other branches especially as a lot around here are old. It’s such a big thing for the community.”

•66-year-old Bonita Carpenter who lives on Jex Avenue said: “It’s about time. I have had to go into the city to do the things I used to do in the branch. I was very annoyed when it closed. I’ve always lived here and always used it. It was such a pain going into the city.”

•Musician Terry Eastell, 58, whose partner lives on St Mildreds Road said: “It’s very good and it’s handy for my partner. I use this service quite a lot and it’s nice it will be back on the doorstep.”

•Larkman Fish Bar owner, Caroline Middleton, 44, said: “We’ve noticed less traffic since there was no post office. A lot of people have said they miss it. There are a lot of older people who live around here and can’t drive so it will be good when the branch reopens.”

The branch was closed in August 2013 after the Co-Op store in which it was situated decided not to renew its lease.

Local councillors, including Mike Sands, campaigned to reopen the branch, which they felt was important for the local community - with Mr Sands instrumental in seeing the Post Office starting a public consultation in October regarding the branch reopening.

The post office will reopen on Tuesday, February 10 at 1pm inside the same premises as the previous branch which is now L & K convenience stores run by Kiran Desor.

Mrs Desor said: “The customers are so happy that it is being reopened and they are really glad. Everyone has been talking about it.

“I thought it would be a good idea to reopen it as it would be good for the community to have a local post office.”

The branch will offer a wide range of postal services, including letter and parcel services, bill paying, travel money and insurance and withdrawals using a Post Office card account.

Wendy Hamilton, for the Post Office, said: “We know how important Post Office services are to residents in Norwich and we are confident this vibrant new-style Post Office at the heart of the community will be popular.”

The branch will be open from Monday to Saturday, 7am to 9pm and 8am to 8pm on Sunday.
