A popular Greek restaurant that has been a fixture in Norwich's Prince of Wales Road for nearly 30 years could be turned into a bar.

Demetris Asprou opened Krasadis Taverna about 28 years ago, but he has decided to give up the business because of his wife's illness.

The property was put on the market to let earlier this year, but an application has now been submitted by Mr Asprou's son Lucas for a change of use.

The son said he wanted to bring a new concept to Prince of Wales Road – a street packed to the brim with clubs and bars and restaurants, and once dubbed the most dangerous in Norfolk.

He said: 'It will be something completely different to what Norwich already has. Most of the bars in the street play loud music until about 6am. But I want to go back to what it used to be like. It will be a place to relax, where people can go for a chat and a quiet drink.'

He acknowledged that people would be sad to see the end of Krasadis, but said he had persuaded his father that the restaurant was not going to be rented or sold in the forseeable future. He said: 'When we had the place up for rent, we had a lot of interest. But some people made silly offers and tried to virtually get the place for free.

'When we found out that my mother had cancer, I quit my job to help my father at the restaurant, but he wants to get out of the business to look after her.'

Mr Asprou opened his first Greek restaurant and kebab shop at the site now occupied by El Greco's kebab shop in Prince of Wales Road 33 years ago, and it lasted five years before he opened Krasadis. It was the first kebab shop in the city and he said people would stand and stare at the kebabs because most had never seen them before.

The plans for a change of use in the basement and ground floor of the building will be discussed by the city council's planning committee at a date to be fixed.
