Norwich council seeks compensation after postal delays

Postal deliveries are back on track after widespread disruption over the festive period, according to Royal Mail bosses.
The news comes as City Hall officials revealed that they were seeking compensation from the postal company over delays with the delivery of Citizen, the council publication for people who live in the city.
Norwich City Council chiefs said the quarterly magazine was still being delivered this month despite being filled with information relating to the Christmas and New Year.
As previously reported, the Evening News was flooded with complaints from people who said their post has been delayed due to bad weather and a Christmas backlog.
A Royal Mail spokesman yesterday said deliveries and collections were back to normal.
But Jill Brighton, 72, of Flordon Road, Newton Flotman, said she had only just received a Christmas card from her friend who lives two miles away in Tasburgh. The postage stamp was dated December 20.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We apologise to any customer if individual items of mail posted by our recommended posting dates did not arrive in time for Christmas. Our service update this morning reports normal deliveries and collections throughout the area.”
Royal Mail recruited 23,00 additional temporary staff nationwide over the Christmas period.
In some parts of the country, postal workers were drafted in to deliver mail on Sunday to help clear the backlog but not in Norfolk.
A Norwich City Council spokesman said: “There were widespread problems with the distribution of our winter issue of Citizen, which included dates of Christmas and New Year events happening around the city and advertisements relating to the festive period.
“We have arranged a meeting with our distributor and Royal Mail to find out what happened and specifically why copies have been going out in January, despite repeated requests that Royal Mail cease all deliveries.
“We will be seeking full reimbursement of our distribution and all other associated costs and seeking assurances that there will be no repeat of these problems in the future. We would like to apologise to everyone for the inconvenience caused.”
