Brexit will be at the centre of a Liberal Democrat's bid to unseat a long-sitting Conservative at this year's snap general election.

South Norfolk Liberal Democrats adopted public relations business owner and father-of-three Chris Brown as their candidate to fight the South Norfolk constituency at a packed meeting of members held at Tivetshall Village Hall.

After being adopted Mr Brown - who previously served as a borough councillor for the party in Reading before moving to Denton, near Harleston - said: “Last week’s elections for the county council demonstrated quite clearly that we are the only credible alternative to the Conservatives here in South Norfolk.

“We will be campaigning hard to unseat the hard Brexit supporting Richard Bacon.

“The Lib Dems are the only party with a clear policy on how to handle the Brexit negotiations and we totally reject the concept of a hard Brexit, which would have disastrous consequences for the UK.

“The only sensible way forward on this critical issue is for the people to have their say on the final Brexit deal in a referendum with Remain as an option. Let the people decide.”

Other confirmed candidates for South Norfolk are Richard Bacon (Conservative), Danielle Glavin (Labour) and Catherine Rowett (Green).
