Fears that plans for travellers' pitch in Horsford could become 'another Dale Farm situation'

PUBLISHED: 11:48 10 September 2012

Plans to create a single travellers' pitch on land in Horsford will be discussed by Broadland District Council on Wednesday after the local member raised concerns it could become "another Dale Farm situation".

The proposal, for the former Horsford Produce Centre site on New Holme Farm, Holt Road, would see the change of use of the land as well as changes to an existing building to create a stable.

They will be discussed by members of the Broadland planning committee after ward councillor John Starling asked for the application to be called in.

He said he was concerned about the precedent it would set in the area. “Residents in the village are not against one pitch,” he said. “But having set a precedent of one pitch, the likelihood of ‘relatives’ moving in could soon see caravans coming on to this site.

“It could turn out to be another Dale Farm situation and I am sure BDC could not afford the cost in getting the travellers moved on.”

Last year council bailiffs evicted about 80 families from the Dale Farm travellers’ site on a plot of land near Basildon in Essex, following a high-profile battle.

He said, if approved, he would like to see a condition put on the planning permission which said no other pitches would be allowed.

Horsford Parish Council has objected to the application and one other letter of objection has been sent to the district council.

Four letters supporting the plans have been sent. They say it would allow the family planning to live there to continue their heritage and traditions.
