Council swamped with calls for more Norwich grit bins

PUBLISHED: 09:54 01 February 2011

More than 100 requests for new grit bins were submitted to Norwich City Council during the wintry weather in November and December, it has emerged.

The statistic was revealed at a council meeting where Stephen Little, Green councillor for Town Close, queried why he had been told streets such as Newmarket Street and Rupert Street, could not have new grit bins.

Steve Morphew, leader of Norwich City Council, said it cost about £270 for the city council to provide a bin and said the priority was to maintain and replace existing grit bins.

He said the council had received more than a hundred requests in November and December, but in 2009/10 had only been able to afford six new grit bins.

Grit bins would be reviewed, he said, by the city and county council in the summer.
