Dramatic scenes were witnessed in Norwich Thursday night when a police car was involved in a crash with a van.

It happened around 8pm at the junction of Mile Cross Lane, Boundary Road, and Aylsham Road, close to the Boundary pub.

Eyewitnesses said a police car, on its way to an emergency call, was travelling towards Aylsham Road from Cromer Road and as it crossed the junction was involved in a crash with a Renault Kango van.

Emergency services descended on the scene with more than reportedly 10 police cars, ambulances, and fire engines.

The Ford Focus police car appeared to be heavily damaged.

Norfolk police said the van driver suffered a minor injury, while the police officer was uninjured.

Two children who it was feared had been knocked off their bicycles during the incident were unharmed and it was later found they had fallen off their bikes due to shock.

Police officers could be seen clearing up the scene last night and the damaged police car was removed by a recovery vehicle.

The junction was cleared at 10pm.

Supt Terry Lordan, district commander for Norwich Police, said the collision was not thought to be serious and will be investigated.
