Norwich Cathedral has been in the spotlight as a film backdrop, but yesterday another cast of stars assembled there for a charity cricket match.

The Star Wars star Ewan McGregor was at the cathedral last month for filming of Jack the Giant Killer, while this time the historic landmark provided a beautiful backdrop for more of a sporting epic.

A host of well-known faces, including former Norwich City defender Craig Fleming, Norfolk chef Galton Blackiston and former head of the British Army Lord Richard Dannatt, were among those taking to the field.

Other notable players taking to the field included former Norwich physiotherapist Tim Sheppard, former Norwich North MP Dr Ian Gibson, Norfolk's chief constable Phil Gormley and Anglia News presenter and Evening News columnist Jonathan Wills.

The match, which started at 2pm, was part of a series of events on the Norwich School fields in the shadow of the cathedral which were raising money for Norwich-based breast cancer support group Keeping Abreast and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Chris Bailey, an events manager who co-organised the event which took place on the playing fields in the Lower Close of the cathedral, with Ian Clarke, said he was delighted with how it had gone.

He said: 'We first had the idea over a pint of ale last summer and said wouldn't it be nice if we could do a bit of fundraising.

'We contacted the school who kindly agreed to let us put the match on here which is very good of them and just started asking people.

'We're delighted to have got such a wide range of players.'

Mr Bailey said between 500 and 600 people paid the 5 to come through the gates, watch the cricket and take part in the other activities which included children's activities, afternoon tea and a jazz band.

Galton Blackiston, who runs Morston Hall, a Norfolk-based hotel and restaurant, with his wife Tracy, said it was a 'pleasure' to support the charities. Mr Blackiston, whose son Harry also played, said: 'It's been a fantastic day. It's a privilege to be here.'

Former Canaries defender Craig Fleming, said he was 'pleased to be here' supporting two great charities.

Norfolk's chief constable Phil Gormley said it had been a 'lovely day'.
