A south Norfolk town will once again become a kaleidoscope of colour when a carnival returns next year after nearly two decades.

Wymondham carnival is set to make a comeback on July 26.

The annual event, which was organised by the Lions, was a firm fixture on the town's social calendar for decades.

It started at Wymondham High School and saw floats travel around the town through Fairland Street and Market Street before they finished at Kings Head Meadow.

And now Wymondham business group is planning to bring the community spirit back into the town.

Chairman David Disney, who runs Disney's Deli in Middleton Street, said: 'We want bands and people carrying banners.

'At the end, we want people to join in. We want as many people as possible to end up on Kings Head Meadow where there will be a barbecue.'

The walking carnival will not feature any vehicles.

The meadow will also play host to a mini festival which will see the winner of a new talent show take to the stage.

Auditions for Wymondham Wow Factor are set to start in the New Year and people with a range of different talents are encouraged to audition.

'We are holding the carnival for no reason other than to have a laugh,' Mr Disney said.

The traditional carnival, which attracted thousands of people every year, previously featured a Miss Wymondham competition along with fancy dress, a Punch and Judy show and a display of classic cars.

The late Wing Commander Ken Wallace also swept into the skies on Little Nellie at the carnival during the 1980s.

The committee is recruiting volunteers to help with next year's event.

Anyone who is interested is welcome to attend Wymondham business group's meeting in the council chambers at 5.30pm on Wednesday, December 4.
