Sixteen unwanted racing greyhounds and two lurchers have become calendar stars – photographed against the parks and green spaces within the city of Norwich

The hounds were photographed at 12 locations for this year's Action for Greyhounds 2014 calendar, with the front cover being the Bluebell woods at Earlham Park.

Thirteen of the hounds were rescued and homed by the charity and five were adopted by its supporters.

The calendar is now on sale and all money raised will be put towards raising awareness of the plight of rescued greyhounds – and helping those already being cared for.

Two of the hounds featured in the calendar, Wilf and Snoopy were at a calendar promotions/meet the greyhounds/awareness event at Roys of Wroxham yesterday, and other events will be held at various Norwich venues throughout the rest of 2013.

The charity will have a stall at the RSPCA's Norwich and Mid Norfolk branches' 'Animal Well-fair' event at Norwich Rugby Club, North Walsham Road, Norwich, on Sunday, August 18, from 10am to 4pm.

AFG co-founder Annie Boddey said the charity was hoping to repeat the success of previous calendars, which had sold out.

Speaking at Roys of Wroxham, she said: 'The feedback has been really good. This is a popular holiday destination and we have been meeting people from across the UK and overseas. We always come to Roys on the second week of August.'

All the photographs in the calendar were taken by award-winning David Turner.

The calendar also includes backstories for each of the hounds featured.

Some of them raced at Great Yarmouth, and one took part in 49 races, while others failed to make the grade, and became strays.

One of the dogs was abused by its owner, who was given a 5-year ban from owning dogs and a fine, following an RSPCA prosecution.

Wilf came into the care of AFG a year ago, aged five. He was a free giveaway on an internet site, and had been ridden as a pony by a child.. He has now been rehomed.

Snoopy was another free giveaway and was in a terribly emaciated state, but he has now been rehomed and is enjoying life.

The calendar is £6.50 and is available from the website www.actionforgreyhounds.co.uk
