Next generation fashion designers from Norwich University of the Arts to take part in Norwich Fashion Week
First and second year fashion degree students from the Norwich University of the Arts (NUA) are highlighting how fashion made in Norwich has a future by showcasing two collections at the Norwich Lanes Fashion Show on March 8.
Fashion boutiques and hair stylists in the Lanes will be highlighting independent fashion from Norwich’s historical quarter in a catwalk show at Norwich Arts Centre.
First year students from NUA have collaborated on a deconstruction/reconstruction collection where second-hand clothing from Cancer Research UK is used to create innovative outfits.
Designs such as Richard Whitehead’s nature-inspired cream dress – which is focused more on textile techniques with shredded muslin used for detailing on the skirt and use of a pressing technique usually used in hat making to mould the outfit – take the ‘mend and make do’ mentality to the next level. As does Jessica Clarke’s tunic dress which is made from a man’s shirt and a bra.
Second year students will showcase a tailored collection of coats and jackets, including Elizabeth Grant’s grey jacket with bright orange detail inspired by a traditional shooting jacket and Emma Silburn’s cape inspired by World War Two.
Fashion degree course leader Sue Chowles said that providing these ‘real life’ platforms for inspiring
designers is crucial in students’ education.
“Students learn a lot of skills such as pattern cutting, design and tailoring at university, but these skills can really be put into practice by developing a collection to showcase on a platform such as the catwalk at Norwich Fashion Week,” she said.
“These real-life projects give the students an insight on how they can fit into the fashion industry, giving them a platform to be recognised and boosting their confidence so that they feel able to sell their designs when they graduate.”
The Norwich Lanes Fashion Show takes place on Friday March 8 at Norwich Arts Centre from 7.30pm. Tickets are £15 (£12 concessions) and are available from Norwich Arts Centre 01603 660352.
