A Crowdfunding page has been set up to help a severely-disabled couple enjoy an international honeymoon cruise after tying the knot.

Sophie and Jason Adams, 41 and 43, from Hellesdon, both have multiple sclerosis (MS), but family and friends are determined to raise £3,500 so the newlyweds can go on a week-long cruise from Southampton to Norway this June.

The cost is higher for the Norwich couple because they would need a cabin specially adapted to improve disabled access for the washing and sleeping areas, which would need specific equipment and space for two carers.

School friend of Mrs Adams, Vicky Grinnell-Wright, 41, from Wales, set up the online fundraising page which has so far raised just over £1,100.

She said: 'Because of the exponential cost to allow them to travel they cannot meet it. Going on honeymoon is a way of them not being defeated or limited by their illness. This is mammoth undertaking for them and their family.'

Mrs Adams was a talented gymnast and physiotherapist before developing MS aged 26.

She is now unable to speak or move, communicates using eye movements and a word board and needs 24/7 care.

Her husband has to use a wheelchair but can still talk.

Mrs Grinnell-Wright said: 'With something as enduring as Sophie's MS, you can do very little. Crowdfunding is great because everyone can give something small but together that brings about big benefits for the person who receives it.'

She said the condition, which affects the brain and/or spinal cord, has forced her friend to have an isolating existence because of her inability to leave the house.

But Mrs Grinnell-Wright added Mrs Adams fought the condition 'valiantly' in the early stages of her MS.

'She still manages to smile, laugh and enjoy the moment. I would put nothing past her,' Mrs Grinnell-Wright said.

Both Mr and Mrs Adams met through a dating website in spring 2015 and arranged their first date in a Norwich café.

Mr Adams said: 'The Crowdfunding page is fabulous. Every penny given is a big help. Sophie is very pleased.'
