Youngsters from single parent families hope to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime trip if they receive a Community Cash grant.

Single Parents in Norfolk (SPIN) want to take dozens of children on a trip of their choosing after applying for money from the Evening News and Red Nose Day campaign.

Last year, the volunteer group received 1,000 of Comic Relief Community Cash money, which funded a host of activities for single parents and their children.

Fund raising organiser Emma Gilson, of Mile Cross, said: 'What we want to do is to organise a memorable trip for children in the summer. We are going put the idea to a panel of youngsters so they can decide where they want to go – whether it is Legoland or a trip to the space museum. Some of these children have damaging memories and we want to build happy ones.'

More than 70 parents attend the SPIN meetings in Hellesdon, where children can take part in a range of affordable activities, from art classes to subsidised outings.

The organisation also offers a support service to adults including advice on how to deal with depression, bereavement and domestic violence.

The 28-year-old mother-of-three continued: 'Small grants are the only way our group can continue. Because we are a voluntary group we rely solely on membership fees. Being able to give the children a treat and show them that there is a life outside of the group, would be really special.'

Small organisations have the chance to apply for a wedge of 50,000 as part of this year's Evening News and Red Nose Day Community Cash Campaign. The grants between 500 and 1,000 are available to groups with an income of less than 50,000 in the past year, who are in the Norwich City Council local authority area, and are working within a disadvantaged or deprived community. Forms can be obtained by writing to Red Nose Day Community Cash, Evening News, Prospect House, Rouen Road, Norwich, NR1 1RE.

Application forms can also be picked up from the Evening News office at Prospect House or downloaded from www.eveningnews.co.uk. The deadline is on Friday, March 18. Completed applications should be sent to Norfolk Community Foundation, St James Mill, Whitefriars, Norwich, NR3 1SH.
