Cellist Andrew Harsley, 13, of Drayton, a pupil of Notre Dame High School, Norwich, won the Michael Badminton prize for the most promising string player.

Adjudicator at Sunday's even was Great Yarmouth-born Robert Plane, principal clarinet in the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, who had enjoyed a successful and varied career as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral principal.

Jonathan Wortley, chairman of the Michael Badminton Young Musicians Trust, which promotes the event, said: 'The standard was very high this year. We had quite a large variety of different instruments being played and more applicants than ever.

'It was a very enjoyable day and people were very complimentary. Even if the young people do not win, they will gain something by performing.

'The John Innes Centre is a wonderful place to perform and gives them a chance to play in a really good hall.'

Entries are being welcomed for next year's event. For further information please email Mr Wortley on astsally@lineone.net or telephone 01603 504301.
