Norwich woman to appear on Britain’s Got Talent tonight

A Norwich woman is set to appear in front of millions of people on Britain's Got Talent tonight.

But Donna Thompson, also known as Donna Africa, from Sprowston Road, will not risk of being buzzed off the hit ITV1 show by judges Simon Cowell, David Walliams, Amanda Holden or Alesha Dixon. That is because the model, actress, dancer and poet will be strutting her stuff in a top hat, corset and six-inch heels high above the judges on top of one of London's tallest buildings.

Ms Thompson, originally from Zimbabwe, auditioned for Britain's Got Talent (BGT) last year, singing in a corset to Liza Minnelli's Cabaret, but did not make it through.

However, Ms Thompson, who moved to Norwich six years ago to be closer to her family after living in South Africa, received a call from the BGT team asking her to appear in a film shown as part of the show's opening sequence.

Ms Thompson will be seen dancing on top of the IPC building in Shoe Lane, which has been used as a location in the Doctor Who TV series, with the London Eye and Gherkin landmarks in the background.

'I auditioned but didn't make it, but they then asked me if they could film me so they could add me in the opening sequence.

'They filmed me two weeks ago on top of the IPC building. I'm teasing at the camera in six-inch heels, a red top hat with red and black corset at eye level with the London Eye and Gherkin. It was really high up. It was really daring and quite exciting for a woman in her 50s. I'm flying the flag for women over 50. I'm not a young girl. It was brave or silly.'

Ms Thompson, who thanked the camera and production crews at BGT for making the unexpected appearance possible, said she was disappointed not to have been successful in the auditions, but pleased to be asked back.

'It was an honour. I'm going to be part of it which is going to be great for a woman of my age. It was really fun. It's disappointing not to get through, but just to be part of it is great.'

Ms Thompson, who has a son Chris, has also featured on TV's The Weakest Link.
