Norwich woman’s bid to help flood victims

A Norwich woman has organised a fundraising dance event in aid of Pakistan flood victims after being appalled by harrowing images of refugees on television.

Marilyn Worship, 66, is holding a buffet dance featuring the popular local Lee Vasey Band at the Holiday Inn, near Norwich International Airport, on Saturday.

Miss Worship, who works part-time as an English and Spanish tutor, has worked hard for weeks to arrange the event and find local businesses to sponsor it so that all of the money raised can go directly to charity rather than organisation costs.

The hotel has agreed to provide a free room for the dance and a reduced-cost buffet, while all tickets and posters are being donated by Wensum Print.

Lee Vasey has also agreed to play for a reduced rate. A raffle will be held at the dance, with 15 donated prizes including a three-day car rental from Avis and a crystal lamp made in Pakistan from Ace Leathers.

Floods began in Pakistan in July 2010 after it was hit by unusually heavy monsoon rains.

It is thought that more than 2,000 people were killed and over a million homes were destroyed in a short period.

Miss Worship, who lives at Hellesdon, said: 'It all started when I was watching the TV a couple of months ago. I saw these photographs of this family being moved, and their animals, all standing up to their chests in water and I thought, 'God, this is awful, I've got to do something about this'.'

'It would be absolutely wonderful if things take off this week. It's not expensive really, it's all going to a good cause,' she added.

The event will include a two-course buffet, a raffle with 15 prizes and the Lee Vasey band will play from 7pm until 2am.

All of the money raised will be donated to Mdecins Sans Frontires, which promises to use 100pc of it to help treat victims of the Pakistan floods.
