The city of Norwich has won an award for the best kept war memorial.

As part of the 88th annual conference of The Royal British Legion Norfolk on Saturday the city was awarded the 'Best Kept War Memorial Trophy' in recognition of work carried out.

Kate Williams, county manager Norfolk, said: 'It's fabulous. Every year we usually award our branches with a best kept war memorial or an award for doing their utmost for the war memorials and this year we're so pleased Norwich city has finally got the lovely memorial open. So we decided to give it to Norwich city as a whole.'

She added: 'It's taken many years and many battles and not without controversy about the design, but it's here at last and we've got to celebrate it.'

The award was accepted by Steve Morphew, leader of Norwich City Council, on behalf of the city at the event at Norfolk County Hall on Martineau Lane and guest speakers included the Patron of The Royal British Legion Norfolk, General Sir Richard and Lady Dannatt.
