An organisation which helps provide people with life-saving skills has issued a call for brave volunteers to walk over hot coals to help raise vital funds for the charity.

The Norfolk branch of the St John Ambulance is organising a fire walk at the Eaton Vale Activity Centre later this summer as part of a new fundraising drive.

Colin Lang, youth and community liaison officer for the Norfolk branch, said: “I’m trying to think up new ideas of raising money for the charity and so decided that in September we would do a fire walk.

“It’s not something which is done very often and we’re looking for members of the public to come forward and take part in that.

“It’s an opportunity to try something completely different and, at the same time, raise money for a good cause.

“At the end of the day, I’m sure that by the time they finish it their confidence will be 100pc improved.”

St John Ambulance will be providing first aid for the event, which takes place on Friday, September 2 at the Eaton-based activity centre.

Participants, who will get a certificate, will also be given two hours’ training ahead of the walk about how to “psyche” themselves up and complete it without getting hurt.

Mr Lang said each person wanting to undertake a firewalk for the charity would have to commit to raising at least £100, which would cover the cost of them completing the walk.

The rest of the money raised will be split 50/50 between St John Ambulance and a charity of the their choice.

Money raised for St John will go the youth and community team, helping to provide free first aid courses for pupils in schools, and to help continue to sponsor a nurse at an eye hospital in Jerusalem.

The event starts at 6pm and includes a barbecue. The fire will be lit at 8pm with the firewalk starting at 8.30pm.
